National Night Out – Borough of Moscow

“National Night Out”, a unique crime and drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch is a program designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participate in local anticrime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Moscow Borough has been participating in this event, which is always held on the second Tuesday of August, since 2004. In each of those years the Borough has won an award, the first being “Rookie of the Year” for the category “Under 15,000 Population”.

As part of this event, all Moscow Borough residents are asked to put their front porch lights on and lock their doors at 5:30 p.m. to acknowledge the evening, and are encouraged to meet their neighbors outside and/or attend events planned for the evening. An award is given for the “best lit” house each year.

Also, on the Monday prior to the event, residents are encouraged to hold block parties in their neighborhoods. The Mayor, Borough Council Members and Officials, and members of the Police Department and Fire Department visit each block party to promote positive community relations with the residents of the Borough.

Each year on National Night Out the Borough presents awards for the following: Citizen of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Moscow Pride and Progress for Residences, Moscow Pride and Progress for Businesses, and Special Recognition Awards. Many positive comments are received from the recipients of these awards noting that it is appreciated that they are being recognized for their achievements.
